Life is short, build stuff that matters

Sustainability / Social Responsibility

Energy demands from buildings are responsible for 40% of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions emitted into the environment.  Poor design, construction quality, and inefficient buildings are three of the biggest sources and easily preventable energy waste in the real estate development industry.  Energy-efficient buildings can reduce the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling without sacrificing comfort through improved building design and construction quality.  A more mindful attention to quality and efficiency does not increase costs when expectations are set early and all parties involved are committed.

Turner Development has committed to spark conversations about the environment and our role in protecting it.  Environmentally conscious Best Practice methods and procedures are part of the conversation at every stage of the development process.  Nothing is more sustainable than long lasting structures.

Turner is committed to help create sustainable buildings and communities and to leave a positive impact on the built world.

Building Blocks.

Moveable Feast

The mission of Moveable Feast is to foster a community that cares for men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses by preparing and delivering nutritious meals and groceries and providing nutritional counseling. Other services include culinary workforce training programs to give vital skills to members of the community including homeless shelters and halfway houses. Hundreds of people have graduated from the program and are now gainfully employed back in the community. Turner Development is proud to support Movable Feast volunteering in their kitchen preparing & packaging food, and in their annual “Ride for the Feast” to support the 750,000 meals and 6,000 clients it serves each year. Without its dedicated staff and volunteers, thousands of people would go hungry each day.

Rappeling for Charity

For two years in a row, Turner Development Group was proud to play host for Gaudenzia’s Repelling for Charity. In an effort to help raise $6 million dollars for a new inpatient rehabilitation building in Baltimore, Gaudenzia lead a team from Over the Edge (www.overtheedgeusa.com), and Turner Development to organize a fund raiser to send participants Over the Edge! Silo Point was the backdrop as people literally rappelled down 300’ to help raise money for Gaudenzia.

About Gaudenzia: Gaudenzia’s mission is to help people affected by chemical dependency, mental illness and related conditions to achieve a better quality of life – allowing them to live as productive and accountable individuals. Gaudenzia offers comprehensive outpatient and residential programs that address the specialized substance abuse treatment, prevention and education needs of men, women, and children.

CLEAN TEAM

In an unprecedented neighborhood cleaning initiative, Turner Development and the Living Classrooms Foundation’s Project SERVE have come together to establish a “Clean Team” in the Westport neighborhood.

The Clean Team, funded by Turner Development and managed by the Living Classrooms Foundation’s Project SERVE, began in late September 2008. The Clean Teams role is to improve and maintain streets, sidewalks, and alleys, helping supplement the city’s baseline services. They help by clearing trash, pulling weeds, and cut back overgrown grass throughout the neighborhood. They also help and assist neighbors clearing out alleys and walkways. Their duties act as an example for neighbors and for other neighborhoods to take a hands on approach when it comes to cleaning your own neighborhood.
